The SANDVIK COROMANT 5749091 is a SCMT-style indexable turning insert in the CoroTurn 107 series, designed for external turning operations on stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. The insert is manufactured from solid carbide with a TiAlN and AlCr2O3 dual-layer coating applied via PVD process, providing heat resistance and edge stability at elevated cutting speeds. It features a 90-degree square geometry, a 0.5000-inch inscribed circle, and a 0.0313-inch (1/32-inch) corner radius. The MM chip breaker geometry is engineered for controlled chip formation in difficult-to-machine ISO M and S workpiece materials. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists are the primary installers of this insert type.
This insert is suited for finish to semi-finish turning passes on stainless steel components and high-temperature alloy parts in both production and job-shop environments. The neutral hand designation makes it compatible with standard SCMT-style tool holders used in a wide range of CNC turning centers and manual lathes. The four available cutting edges support cost-effective tool life management. Applications include shaft turning, facing, and profiling where chip control in gummy or work-hardening materials is a priority.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard indexable insert for SCMT-style tool holders accepting a 432 insert size with a 0.2165-inch hole diameter and screw-lock clamping. ISO code SCMT 12 04 08-MM 1115 can be used to cross-reference compatible holder specifications.
Indexable turning inserts are seated and secured by a machinist or CNC toolroom technician with the machine in a fully powered-down and locked-out state per applicable shop safety procedures. The insert pocket and clamping screw should be inspected for debris or damage before seating a new insert. Use the correct torque driver for the clamping screw as specified by the tool holder manufacturer — do not over-torque, as this can damage the insert seat or fracture the carbide. Index or replace the insert at the first signs of edge wear to avoid workpiece damage or tool holder pocket erosion.
