The SANDVIK COROMANT 5747158 is a solid carbide, uncoated milling insert engineered for the R790 cutter series. It features a parallelogram shape with a positive 9-degree rake angle and a corner radius of 0.50 mm, making it well-suited for high-precision shoulder milling operations. The insert measures 11.00 mm wide, 4.00 mm thick, and 12.00 mm in length, with two cutting edges per insert. Grade H13A with an uncoated bright finish is optimized for non-ferrous metal cutting applications. Installation uses a screw-holding method on single-sided inserts. This insert is sized to the 160405 insert size code and carries both ANSI and ISO designations R790-160405PH-NM H13A.
This insert is intended for use in R790-series shoulder mills and is designed for machining non-ferrous metals including aluminum, copper, and similar workpiece materials. The right-hand, positive-rake geometry promotes clean chip evacuation and reduced cutting forces during face and shoulder milling. It supports a maximum depth of cut of 12.00 mm, making it practical for moderate to deep shoulder passes in production or job-shop environments. Machinists and tooling technicians working with CNC machining centers will find this insert compatible with standard R790 toolholder bodies. Material grades K20, N15, and S20 indicate suitability across a range of non-ferrous and non-metallic workpiece materials.
Designed for use with R790-series cutter bodies as specified by the manufacturer. Insert size code 160405 and chip breaker designation NM are required when selecting compatible toolholders. Confirm toolholder bore and insert pocket geometry against the R790 series specification before ordering.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine powered down and locked out per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Use the correct torque screwdriver or hex key specified for the R790 insert clamping screw to avoid seat damage. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the new insert. Replace inserts at the first sign of edge wear or chipping to maintain dimensional accuracy and surface finish quality.
