The SANDVIK COROMANT 5746843 is a solid carbide milling insert engineered for high-performance face and shoulder milling applications. Carrying manufacturer grade 4220, this insert features a multilayer CVD coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN that improves wear resistance and extends tool life in demanding cutting environments. It belongs to the R390 series, uses a parallelogram (R390-17) insert style, and is secured by a screw-holding method. The inscribed circle measures 0.3780 inches (9.60 mm), thickness is 0.1875 inches (4.76 mm), and the corner radius is 0.0315 inches (0.80 mm). With two cutting edges and a positive 10-degree rake angle, this insert is suited to aggressive metal removal rates while maintaining edge integrity.
This insert is designed for use in steel, cast iron, and hard material machining operations in both production and job-shop environments. It is rated for a maximum depth of cut of 0.6299 inches (16.00 mm), making it appropriate for roughing and semi-finishing passes on CNC machining centers and milling machines. The PH chip breaker geometry helps manage chip flow and reduce cutting forces. The insert conforms to ANSI and ISO standards under the code R390-17 04 08M-PH 4220, and it is compatible with the R390 cutter series. Right-hand cutting orientation applies. Primary workpiece material codes are P (steel), K (cast iron), and H (hard material).
Designed for use with R390-series milling cutter bodies. ANSI and ISO insert code R390-17 04 08M-PH 4220 governs form-factor fitment. Verify cutter body pocket specifications against insert size code 170408 before installation.
This insert is installed and indexed by a licensed machinist or tooling technician. Before changing inserts, ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped, locked out, and all energy sources are isolated per OSHA lockout-tagout procedures. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key to the cutter body manufacturer-specified torque for the screw-held pocket — do not overtighten, as this can crack the carbide insert. Inspect the insert pocket seating surface for debris or damage before seating the new insert.
