The SANDVIK COROMANT 5746052 is a solid carbide milling insert in manufacturer grade 2040, designed for high-productivity shoulder milling in demanding material applications. Built to the R390 series standard, this insert carries a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCrN, Al2O3, and TiN, which provides thermal resistance and wear protection during continuous or interrupted cuts. The insert features a positive rake angle of 5 degrees, a corner-rounded cutting edge style, and a right-hand orientation. With a maximum depth of cut of 16.00 mm and two cutting edges per insert, it is suited to production environments where tool life and chip control are priorities. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert as a standard screw-held replacement in compatible milling toolholders.
This insert is intended for milling steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium, corresponding to ISO material grades P45, M40, and S30. It fits the R390 shoulder milling platform and is compatible with M-40 and R390 cutter bodies. The MM chip breaker geometry is optimized for moderate to heavy cutting conditions on these workpiece materials. Typical applications include face milling, shoulder milling, and pocket milling operations in aerospace, general machining, and energy sector component production.
Designed for use with R390 and M-40 series milling cutter bodies accepting insert size code 180612. ANSI and ISO code R390-18 06 12M-MM 2040 confirms fitment in compatible SANDVIK COROMANT R390 toolholders.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the manufacturer-specified torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw to the correct feel — do not overtighten, as this can crack the carbide insert body. Inspect the pocket seat and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating a new insert.
