The SANDVIK COROMANT 5740255 is an indexable square-shoulder face mill designed for high-productivity shoulder milling operations in metalworking and machining environments. Built around the CoroMill 390 platform, it accepts 7 R390-17.. style inserts and delivers a 90-degree lead angle with positive rake geometry for clean, efficient chip formation. The cutter body is machined from steel and sized at 4 inches maximum cutting diameter with a 1-1/2 inch arbor hole, making it a standard fit for horizontal and vertical milling machine spindles. Maximum depth of cut is 15.70 mm (0.618 inches), and overall height is 50.01 mm (1.969 inches). Insert retention uses a clamp-and-screw method for secure tool engagement under heavy feeds.
This face mill is suited for square-shoulder and face milling operations on ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials in production machining settings. Typical applications include roughing and semi-finishing passes on steel and cast iron components in job shops, aerospace part manufacturing, and general industrial machining. The close pitch configuration with 7 insert pockets supports high metal removal rates where machine rigidity allows. Right-hand cutting direction is standard. This tool is handled and installed by machinists and CNC setup technicians operating vertical machining centers, horizontal mills, and manual knee mills equipped with the appropriate arbor.
Compatible with R390-17.. series inserts as specified by the manufacturer. Designed for use on milling machines and machining centers with a 1-1/2 inch arbor and keyway drive. Part of the SANDVIK COROMANT CoroMill 390 system; consult the CoroMill 390 insert selection guide for grade and geometry recommendations appropriate to your workpiece material.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and locked out before mounting or removing this tool body. Torque all insert clamping screws using the appropriate Torx key per the insert manufacturer torque specification printed on the insert packaging — do not substitute a generic spec. Verify arbor fit, keyway engagement, and axial runout with a dial indicator before committing to a production cut.
