The SANDVIK COROMANT 5724970 is a solid carbide turning insert in the CCMT431-MF geometry, designed for precision finishing operations on a CNC or manual lathe. Carrying the 1125 manufacturer grade, this insert features a PVD-applied TiAlN and AlCr2O3 dual-layer coating engineered for high wear resistance when cutting stainless steel, steel, and special or super alloys. The 80-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape provides a sturdy cutting edge geometry, while the MF chip breaker promotes clean chip evacuation during light finishing passes. With a 0.5-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch corner radius, this insert suits fine-tolerance turning work on close-tolerance part features. It is screw-held, neutral-hand, and carries a 7-degree relief angle with positive side clearance.
This insert is part of the CoroTurn 107 series and is intended for external and internal turning applications where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are priorities. It is suited for finishing cuts on stainless steel and steel workpieces in aerospace, energy, and general precision machining environments. Primary workpiece material codes M and S identify its application range: stainless steel with moderate-to-high wear resistance demands, and special or super alloys requiring balanced toughness. The MF chip breaker geometry is specifically optimized for finishing-depth cuts up to 12.50 mm, making it appropriate for final-pass work on tight-tolerance turned components in production or job-shop settings.
Designed for use with CoroTurn 107 series toolholders accepting CCMT431 inserts. ANSI insert code CCMT431, ISO insert code CCMT120404, ISO code CCMT120404MF1125. Compatible with toolholders designed for screw-clamp CCMT geometry inserts with a 0.2165-inch (5.50 mm) hole diameter.
Installation is performed by a machinist or toolroom technician. Before indexing or replacing the insert, ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is secured in the turret or tool post. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw without over-torquing the insert pocket. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before seating the new insert, as contamination in the pocket can affect insert stability and surface finish quality.
