The RUST-OLEUM 865402 is a high-performance direct-to-metal (DTM) alkyd enamel coating designed for rust prevention and long-term corrosion protection on bare and previously painted metal surfaces. Formulated under the 7400 System line, this 1-gallon unit delivers a high-gloss finish in Dunes Tan with up to one-coat coverage. The formula carries a VOC content of 450 g/L or less and dries tack-free in 2 to 4 hours. It meets USDA requirements for incidental food contact and is accepted for use in federally registered Canadian food facilities. Installation is handled by maintenance painters, industrial coating applicators, and facilities maintenance crews working in moderate to slightly severe industrial environments.
This coating is suited for use in industrial and commercial maintenance applications where corrosion resistance and color retention are priorities. Typical substrates include structural steel, equipment housings, storage tanks, railings, and other ferrous metal surfaces exposed to mild chemicals, weather, and physical wear. It is well matched for facilities requiring compliance with food-safety incidental-contact standards, including food processing plants and federally registered Canadian food facilities. The product is available in gallon and five-gallon container sizes to support both spot-repair and large-area applications.
Designed for use within the 7400 System coating platform. Recommended for use over 7400 System Heavy Duty Rust Inhibitive Primers, 7400 System Fast Recoat Primer, and 7400 System Red Damp Proof Primer for maximum corrosion protection and adhesion performance.
Surface preparation is critical before application — remove loose rust, mill scale, grease, and contaminants per the coating manufacturer guidelines. Apply using brush, roller, or conventional spray equipment in accordance with the product data sheet. Ensure adequate ventilation during application and curing. Follow all applicable federal, state, and local regulations governing VOC-compliant coatings in your jurisdiction.
