The RUST-OLEUM 278808 is a 1-gallon, flat-finish, white universal acrylic primer formulated for broad surface compatibility and rust inhibition. It bonds to metal, wood, concrete, plaster, wallboard, hardboard, glass, and tile, making it one of the most versatile primers in the RUST-OLEUM lineup. The rust-inhibitive chemistry allows direct application to bare steel without a separate rust-inhibiting coat. It also blocks stains and resists the growth of mold and mildew, reducing callbacks on jobs where moisture exposure is a concern. Licensed painters, general contractors, and maintenance technicians use it for both interior and exterior work.
The 278808 is suited for residential and light commercial applications where a single primer needs to perform across multiple substrates in one project. Common scenarios include pre-painting drywall repairs, priming bare metal HVAC enclosures, treating concrete walls before finish coat, and spot-priming steel fixtures. The tintable formula allows the primer to be color-matched at the point of sale, reducing the number of finish coats needed for full opacity over dark or stained surfaces.
Formulated for application to metal, wood, concrete, plaster, wallboard, hardboard, glass, and tile surfaces in interior and exterior settings. Available in 1-gallon and 5-gallon sizes for varying project scales.
Surface preparation is critical before applying any primer — clean surfaces thoroughly to remove dust, grease, and loose material before application. RUST-OLEUM recommends using Pre-Paint Cleaning Wipes for best adhesion results. Apply in conditions appropriate for water-based coatings, typically avoiding temperatures below 50 degrees F or above 90 degrees F and high-humidity conditions. Allow full dry time before applying finish coats per label directions.
