The RUST-OLEUM 211775H Varathane Wood Conditioner is an oil-based pre-stain treatment designed to promote even stain absorption on soft and porous wood species. It deeply penetrates wood fibers before staining to prevent blotchy, uneven color results. Sold in a 1-quart container, it covers approximately 110 square feet per quart. This product is intended for use by finish carpenters, cabinet makers, millwork professionals, and experienced DIYers preparing bare wood surfaces for a stain topcoat.

This conditioner is formulated for use on soft and porous woods including pine, maple, alder, fir, and birch. It is suited for interior applications on furniture, cabinets, doors, trim, and paneling where consistent stain color is critical. The high-solid, oil-based formula improves stain control and reduces the grain-raising and blotching that commonly occurs when staining softwoods without prior conditioning. It is not compatible with water-based stains and must be used only with oil-based stain products.
