The RITEN 71053 is a carbide-tipped steel solid dead center designed for use in lathe tailstocks and between-centers turning operations. Built on a 5MT Morse Taper shank, it seats firmly in the tailstock spindle without movement during cutting. The carbide-tipped point delivers extended wear resistance compared to all-steel centers, maintaining accurate contact at the workpiece pivot point. With a head diameter of 1.748 inches and an overall length of 8.5 inches, this center is sized for medium-to-large lathe work. Accuracy is rated at 0.00005 inches, making it suitable for precision turning applications where runout cannot be tolerated.
This solid dead center is used in machine shops and production environments where the workpiece rotates against the stationary center point. It is appropriate for external turning, grinding operations, and any between-centers setup that requires a non-rotating support point. Because the center does not rotate with the workpiece, it is typically used at lower speeds or with lubrication applied at the contact point. Machinists and CNC lathe operators in manufacturing, repair shops, and toolrooms are the primary installers of this type of center.
Designed as an OEM-style solid dead center for lathes and grinding machines equipped with a No. 5 Morse Taper tailstock spindle bore.
Installation is performed by machinists familiar with lathe tailstock tooling. Power down and bring the machine spindle to a complete stop before inserting or removing the center. Clean the Morse Taper bore and shank with a lint-free cloth before seating to ensure full contact and prevent fretting. When removing, use a knockout bar or drift of appropriate diameter through the tailstock spindle bore to eject the center cleanly without impact damage to the taper surfaces.
