The RITEN 71031 is a solid dead center designed for precision lathe work in machine shops and metalworking environments. Built from hardened tool steel, this center features a standard point style and mounts via a 3MT Morse taper shank. It delivers a runout accuracy of 0.00005 inches, making it suitable for tight-tolerance turning operations. With a head diameter of 0.938 inches and an overall length of 5.25 inches, the 71031 is a direct-mount workholding component installed by machinists and toolroom technicians. It does not rotate with the workpiece and is intended for use where the workpiece or center is lubricated to manage friction at the contact point.
This solid dead center is used in manual and CNC lathes equipped with a 3MT Morse taper tailstock or headstock. It is suited for residential shop environments as well as production machine shops requiring repeatable center-point location. Typical applications include between-centers turning, grinding setups, and cylindrical workholding where a live center is not required or preferred. The standard point geometry accommodates conventional 60-degree center-drilled workpieces.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for lathes and grinding machines with a 3MT Morse taper tailstock or headstock socket accepting a solid dead center with a 0.938 inch head diameter.
Installation is performed by machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the lathe spindle before inserting or removing the center. Clean the Morse taper bore and the center shank thoroughly before seating to ensure full taper contact and accurate alignment. Use a standard drift key through the tailstock knockout slot to remove the center - never strike the workpiece end directly to dislodge it.
