The RITEN 66503 is a solid dead center designed for lathe work requiring a stationary, non-rotating support point at the tailstock or headstock. Built from hardened tool steel, this bull nose point dead center features a 3MT Morse taper shank for secure, repeatable seating in compatible spindles. The bull nose point style provides a broad contact surface suited for supporting hollow workpieces or tubing ends. With a head diameter of 2.75 inches, a point length of 1.939 inches, and a rated accuracy of 0.0001 inches, this center is well-suited for precision turning operations where runout control is critical. Machinists and toolroom technicians working on lathes and cylindrical grinders are the primary installers.
This dead center is appropriate for use in metalworking environments including job shops, production machining, and tool rooms. The 3MT Morse taper shank seats directly into a matching 3MT tailstock quill or headstock spindle without additional adapters. The bull nose configuration makes it particularly useful when the workpiece has a center bore or hollow end that a standard 60-degree point cannot properly engage. The solid (non-rotating) design means the center does not spin with the workpiece, so it is typically used in lower-speed applications or where the workpiece itself provides adequate lubrication at the contact point.
Designed to fit any lathe or cylindrical grinder tailstock or headstock spindle accepting a Number 3 Morse taper (3MT). No specific OEM model compatibility was stated in the product data.
Installation is performed by a machinist or toolroom technician. Before seating the center, power down the lathe and ensure the spindle is fully stopped. Clean the Morse taper bore and the shank with a lint-free cloth to remove chips, oil, and debris - any contamination can cause improper seating and runout error. Insert the taper with a firm, straight push to engage the self-holding taper; do not use a hammer directly on the center body. Because this is a solid dead center, apply a suitable center lubricant or anti-galling compound at the workpiece contact point when running at elevated speeds to prevent heat buildup and scoring.
