The RESEARCH PRODUCTS 6828 is a rectangular zone damper with an integrated synchronous motor, designed for use in forced-air HVAC zoning systems. Built from galvanized steel, it controls airflow through individual duct zones by operating on a power-closed, spring-open action. The motor runs on 24 volts AC at 60 Hz, draws 6 watts and 12 VA, and mounts from the bottom of the duct. At 21-7/8 inches wide and 9.813 inches tall, this damper fits larger rectangular duct openings common in residential and light commercial installations. Licensed HVAC technicians and sheet metal contractors are the primary installers.
The 6828 is suited for residential and light commercial zoning applications where rectangular duct sizes are required. The bottom-mounting configuration accommodates typical horizontal duct runs. The spring-open failsafe operation ensures airflow is restored if power is lost, which is a common requirement in life-safety and comfort zoning designs. This damper is sized for the larger end of the residential and light commercial range, making it appropriate for main trunk branches, large zone feeds, or light commercial multi-zone systems with higher airflow demands.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-installation zone damper for rectangular duct zoning systems in residential and light commercial forced-air HVAC applications.
Installation should be performed by a licensed HVAC technician or qualified sheet metal contractor. De-energize the zone control panel and associated low-voltage wiring before connecting or disconnecting the motor leads. Verify the duct opening dimensions match the damper frame size before installation to ensure a proper seal. Follow applicable mechanical codes, including SMACNA duct construction standards, for fastening and sealing the damper frame to the duct.
