The RENISHAW A-5003-0062 is a CMM ball stylus designed for coordinate measuring machine probing applications. It features a 5 mm ruby ball tip mounted on a solid carbide stem with an M3 thread interface. Ruby is the standard material choice for CMM contact points due to its hardness, dimensional stability, and low surface adhesion, which helps maintain measurement accuracy over extended use cycles. The carbide stem provides rigidity and minimizes deflection during probing. Overall length is 40 mm with an effective working length of 40 mm, making it suited for moderate-depth feature access. Dimensional metrology technicians and CMM programmers are the primary users of this stylus.
This stylus is used in dimensional inspection environments where a coordinate measuring machine requires a ball-type probe for surface contact measurement. It fits M3-threaded stylus holders, extension bars, and probe modules common in quality control labs and in-process inspection setups. Typical applications include measuring bores, slots, surface profiles, and geometric features on machined or cast components. The 5 mm ball diameter and 40 mm overall length suit a range of standard inspection tasks in both production floor and metrology lab settings.
Designed as an OEM-style CMM ball stylus for use with M3-threaded probe heads, stylus holders, and extension bars standard in coordinate measuring machine configurations.
CMM stylus replacement and installation should be performed by a qualified metrology technician following the CMM manufacturer's probe qualification procedure. Power down or pause the CMM and disable any motorized probe head movement before handling the stylus. Use a stylus wrench or the manufacturer-recommended tool to thread the stylus to the appropriate seating torque without overtightening, which can damage the ruby ball seating or the M3 thread. After installation, run a full probe qualification routine to update the stylus offset data in the CMM controller before beginning inspection.
