The RENISHAW A-5000-4156 is a CMM ball stylus designed for use with coordinate measuring machines in precision metrology applications. It features a 6 mm ruby ball tip mounted on a stainless steel stem with an M2 threaded connection. The overall length is 10 mm, making it a compact stylus suited for measuring in confined geometries and tight-tolerance inspection routines. Ruby is the preferred ball material in CMM work because of its hardness, dimensional stability, and low wear rate during repetitive contact cycles. This stylus is installed by metrology technicians and quality control professionals performing dimensional inspection on manufactured parts.
This stylus is appropriate for use in both production-floor CMM setups and laboratory-grade inspection environments. The M2 thread is a standard connection size found on a wide range of CMM probe heads and stylus extension systems. The 6 mm ball diameter and 10 mm overall length suit applications where moderate ball size and short reach are needed, such as feature inspection on machined castings, stamped parts, and precision-machined components in aerospace, automotive, and general manufacturing settings.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use stylus for CMM systems accepting M2 threaded ball styli.
CMM styli are installed by qualified metrology technicians using the appropriate stylus wrench to avoid overtightening the M2 thread connection, which can damage the probe head seat or stylus stem. Before changing styli, power down or park the CMM probe head per the machine manufacturer's procedure to prevent collision damage. Handle the ruby ball carefully during installation, as impact or dropping can chip the ball and introduce measurement error. After installation, perform a qualification routine using the machine's reference sphere before committing the stylus to production inspection.
