The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 6000170 is a taper length drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling across a wide range of materials. Built from high speed steel with a bright/uncoated finish, it measures 0.0820 inches in diameter — equivalent to wire gauge size 45 — and features a standard 118-degree split point with web thinning for improved penetration and reduced walking on entry. The spiral flute geometry runs at a 6xD flute-to-diameter ratio, providing efficient chip evacuation during through-hole and deep drilling operations. A straight shank ensures compatibility with standard drill chucks. Licensed tradespeople and machinists in HVAC fabrication, plumbing rough-in, and electrical panel work rely on this bit for precision hole placement in metal and composite substrates.
The 6000170 is suited for use in both shop and field environments where a compact, taper-length bit is needed over a jobber-length tool. Its 2-1/4-inch flute length and 4-1/4-inch overall length provide added reach compared to standard jobber bits without sacrificing rigidity. The right-hand cut and regular spiral type make it appropriate for use in conventional drill presses, handheld power drills, and CNC setups. This bit conforms to ANSI standards and is sold individually, with a minimum order quantity of 12 units.
Compatible material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, aluminum alloy, brass, bronze, carbon steel, cast iron, cermet, copper, graphite, hardened steel, high strength bronze, magnesium, magnesium alloy, malleable iron, nickel, nickel alloy, reinforced plastic materials, and stainless steel. Fits any standard straight-shank drill chuck accepting a 0.0820-inch shank diameter.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists, tradespeople, or experienced operators familiar with rotating cutting tools. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling and ensure the drill chuck is fully tightened before operating. When drilling hardened or stainless steel, use appropriate cutting fluid to extend bit life and prevent premature dulling. Inspect the bit for chipping or wear before each use and replace if the cutting edges are compromised.
