The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5999944 is a reduced shank twist drill bit designed for general-purpose hole-making in metalworking and fabrication applications. The bit features an 11/16 inch cutting diameter with a reduced 1/2 inch straight-cylindrical shank, allowing it to be chucked in standard 1/2 inch drill chucks despite the larger cutting diameter. Constructed from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, it runs a 118-degree standard point angle and right-hand spiral flutes. Overall length is 6 inches with a 3 inch flute length. Licensed tradespeople and machining professionals rely on this geometry for accurate entry and efficient chip evacuation in production and maintenance drilling tasks.
This drill bit is suited for drilling ferrous metals as its primary workpiece material, and also performs in aluminum, copper, magnesium, nickel, titanium, synthetic materials, and cermet. The reduced shank design extends the usable diameter range of a standard 1/2 inch chuck without requiring a larger machine spindle. Typical install scenarios include structural fab shops, HVAC equipment assembly, electrical panel fabrication, plumbing rough-in, and general mechanical maintenance where holes larger than 1/2 inch are needed from a standard drill press or handheld drill.
Designed as a general-purpose replacement or service bit compatible with any 1/2 inch keyed or keyless drill chuck. Meets ANSI standards for reduced shank twist drill geometry.
A licensed machinist or qualified tradesperson should secure the 1/2 inch shank fully in the chuck jaws before operation, ensuring no shank is exposed beyond the chuck body. Always power down and lock out the drill press or disconnect the handheld tool before changing bits. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling ferrous metals in sustained production runs, even though this bit is rated for dry use. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and regrind or replace when point geometry shows wear to avoid oversized or out-of-round holes.
