The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5998972 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in metal and hard materials. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright/uncoated finish, this bit features a 0.404 inch diameter, a 118-degree standard point angle, and a web-thinned, tapered web configuration that reduces thrust and improves chip evacuation. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in standard drill chucks, and the right-hand spiral flute geometry pulls chips away from the cutting zone efficiently. This is a Series R42 bit rated for general purpose and high performance applications.
This drill bit is suited for machinists, toolroom technicians, and maintenance trades working with titanium, steel, and similar workpiece materials. The screw machine length format — shorter overall length than a jobber bit — provides added rigidity and reduced deflection, making it a preferred choice for precision hole location on CNC machines, manual drill presses, and screw machines. The 2.5xD flute-to-diameter ratio supports chip clearance across a range of feed rates. Meets ANSI standards.
Designed as a screw machine length replacement or production drill bit for use with standard drill chucks and collets accepting a straight-cylindrical shank in the 0.4000 to 0.4500 inch diameter range. Primary workpiece material rating is titanium; also suitable for general purpose drilling in other metals.
Installation and use should be performed by a qualified machinist or tool technician familiar with drill press, CNC, or manual machine operation. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank fully in a properly sized chuck or collet before operation. Inspect the cutting edges and web for wear or chipping before each use; a damaged point increases heat buildup and hole inaccuracy. Follow machine manufacturer guidelines for feed rate and spindle speed appropriate to the workpiece material.
