The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5998947 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance metal drilling in industrial and shop environments. Manufactured from high speed steel with a bright/uncoated finish, it features a 0.302 inch diameter (Letter N), a standard 118-degree point angle, and a web-thinned, tapered web configuration that reduces thrust and improves chip ejection. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without modification. Overall length is 2-13/16 inches with a flute length of 1-5/8 inches, giving it the compact profile characteristic of screw machine length tooling. Machinists, toolroom techs, and CNC operators install this bit for close-tolerance drilling where stub length rigidity matters.
This drill bit is built for use on titanium as its primary workpiece material, making it appropriate for aerospace, medical, and precision machining applications where high speed steel tooling is specified. The screw machine length profile provides added rigidity compared to jobber length bits, reducing deflection in short-reach applications. It conforms to ANSI standards and is classified as a general purpose grade within the Series R42 line. A flute-to-diameter ratio of 2.5xD supports chip clearance in moderate-depth holes.
Designed as a direct-fit screw machine length drill bit for use in standard drill chucks, CNC machining centers, and drill presses accepting straight-cylindrical shanks. Sized to ANSI standards in the 0.3000 to 0.3500 inch decimal range.
Installation is performed by machinists or toolroom personnel following standard tooling change procedures. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank fully in the chuck before operation and confirm runout with a dial indicator if close tolerances are required. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before inserting or removing the bit. Do not exceed the recommended feed and speed parameters for the workpiece material being drilled.
