The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5997149 is a taper length drill bit designed for general-purpose and heavy-duty drilling across a wide range of metallic and non-metallic materials. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, it is ground to a wire gauge size of 49, equivalent to 0.0730 inches in decimal diameter. The 135-degree split point self-centers on contact, reducing the need for a center punch and minimizing walking on flat or curved surfaces. With a parabolic flute geometry and a 6xD flute-to-diameter ratio, the bit evacuates chips efficiently at higher feed rates. Machinists, toolroom technicians, and maintenance mechanics typically install and use this bit in benchtop or floor-standing drill presses and CNC operations.
This bit is suited for drilling alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, tempered steel, cast iron, malleable iron, aluminum, aluminum alloy, brass, bronze, copper, nickel, titanium, titanium alloy, magnesium, magnesium alloy, and graphite. The taper length body provides extended reach compared to jobber-length bits, making it practical for deeper holes where a standard-length bit cannot reach the required depth. It is equally at home in production environments and maintenance-repair-overhaul (MRO) shops requiring consistent, repeatable hole quality in mixed-material applications.
Designed as a general-purpose taper length replacement bit conforming to ANSI standards, compatible with any standard drill press or CNC spindle chuck accepting a 0.0730-inch straight cylindrical shank.
This bit is installed and operated by machinists, toolroom technicians, or qualified maintenance mechanics. Secure the straight shank fully within the chuck jaws and verify concentricity before starting the cut. Always power down and de-energize the machine before changing bits. Use appropriate cutting fluid for ferrous materials to extend tool life and maintain hole quality.
