The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996583 is a taper length cobalt drill bit in the M51CO series, designed for high-performance drilling in demanding trade and industrial applications. It measures 11/32 inches (0.3438 inches decimal) in diameter with a 6-1/2 inch overall length and a 4-1/8 inch spiral flute. The 135-degree split point geometry enables self-centering entry without a center punch on most materials, reducing walking and improving hole accuracy. The gold oxide finish indicates a cobalt steel construction suited for abrasive and hard materials that would quickly wear down standard HSS bits. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and fabricators reach for this bit when working with tougher stock.
This bit is built for use on a wide range of materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, cast iron, malleable iron, brass, bronze, high-strength bronze, copper, aluminum, aluminum alloy, magnesium, magnesium alloy, nickel, nickel alloy, reinforced plastic, cermet, and graphite. It suits both manual and machine drilling setups in fabrication shops, maintenance environments, and production drilling where a taper length shank provides added reach beyond a jobber-length bit. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without adapters.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use taper length drill bit compatible with any standard drill chuck accepting an 11/32 inch straight cylindrical shank; no coolant-through capability, so use with standard external cutting fluid application where required by the material.
Installation is performed by machinists or qualified maintenance technicians using a drill press, mill, or hand drill with an appropriate chuck. Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify runout before starting the cut. Apply cutting fluid or cutting oil when drilling ferrous metals, stainless steel, or nickel alloys to manage heat and extend tool life. Do not exceed the recommended RPM for the bit diameter and material being drilled, as cobalt bits can be brittle under lateral load or excessive feed pressure.
