The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996500 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it delivers superior heat and wear resistance compared to standard HSS bits. The 135-degree split point reduces walking at startup and lowers thrust force, making it well suited for production drilling and repetitive-cycle machining. The right-hand spiral flute geometry promotes efficient chip evacuation. Overall length is 2-11/16 inches with a 1-1/2 inch flute length, and the straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without modification. This bit is installed and used by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working in metal fabrication and repair environments.
This drill bit is sized at 9/32 inch (0.2810 inch decimal, letter size K) and falls within the 0.2500 to 0.3000 inch diameter range of the M42CO series. Its screw machine length profile — shorter than jobber length — provides added rigidity and reduced deflection in drill press, mill, and turret lathe applications. The 2.5xD flute-to-diameter ratio and tapered web configuration with web thinning make it effective on stainless steel, tool steel, high-nickel alloys, and other hard workpiece materials where standard cobalt or HSS bits struggle.
Designed as a general-purpose screw machine length drill bit for use in drill presses, knee mills, turret lathes, and hand-held electric drills where a straight-cylindrical shank is accepted. Suited for drilling hard materials including hardened steels, stainless steel, and high-nickel alloys.
Install and remove drill bits only with the machine powered off and the spindle fully stopped. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in a properly sized chuck or collet before beginning any drilling operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling hard or ferrous materials to preserve cutting edge life, noting this bit does not support coolant-through delivery. Follow applicable shop safety practices and machine manufacturer guidelines for speed and feed selection based on workpiece material.
