The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996437 is a taper length cobalt drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding metal fabrication and maintenance applications. Built to Series M52CO standards, it carries a No. 2 wire gauge size (0.2210 inches decimal), a 135-degree split point for self-centering starts, and a gold oxide finish applied over cobalt tool steel. The straight cylindrical shank and spiral flute geometry provide reliable chip evacuation, while the web-thinned, tapered web construction reduces thrust during entry. Licensed tradespeople and machining professionals select this bit when standard HSS tooling falls short on harder or abrasive workpiece materials.
This bit is suited for drilling alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, malleable iron, hardened steel, brass, bronze, high-strength bronze, copper, aluminum, aluminum alloy, magnesium, magnesium alloy, nickel, nickel alloy, cermet, graphite, and reinforced plastic. Its taper length body, longer than a jobber-length bit, provides additional reach for deeper holes in structural components, fixtures, and production setups where a jobber length would not clear the workpiece or fixture geometry.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use taper length drill bit for any drill press, CNC machining center, or hand drill with a standard straight-shank chuck accepting a 0.2210-inch shank diameter, conforming to ANSI standards for taper length drill bits.
Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify zero runout before cutting, as cobalt bits are more brittle than HSS and can fracture under lateral load. Apply cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material to extend tool life, particularly when drilling stainless steel or hardened alloys. Follow shop-specific lockout procedures when mounting bits in drill press or CNC spindles. Inspect the cutting edges before each use — cobalt bits should be resharpened on a dedicated drill grinder rather than discarded at first dullness.
