The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996404 is a taper length cobalt drill bit engineered for demanding material removal in professional trade and industrial environments. It carries a wire gauge size of #10 (0.1935 inches diameter) and an overall length of 6 inches, with a 3-5/8 inch spiral flute length. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and allows self-centering entry without a center punch. The cobalt tool material provides elevated heat resistance, making it appropriate for drilling hard, abrasive, or work-hardening materials. This bit is used by machinists, maintenance mechanics, pipefitters, and fabricators who require consistent, repeatable hole quality in production settings.
The 5996404 is suited for use in ferrous and non-ferrous materials across a wide range of applications. Compatible material applications include alloy steel, carbon steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, cast iron, malleable iron, aluminum, aluminum alloy, brass, bronze, high strength bronze, copper, magnesium, magnesium alloy, nickel, nickel alloy, reinforced plastic materials, cermet, and graphite. The taper length body provides added rigidity over jobber-length bits, reducing deflection in deeper-hole applications. The right-hand, regular spiral flute configuration handles chip evacuation effectively in both manual and machine drilling setups.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks accepting a 0.1935 inch straight shank. Suitable for bench drills, drill presses, and hand-held power drills operating at appropriate speeds for cobalt tooling in the listed material applications.
Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify runout before drilling. A licensed machinist or qualified maintenance mechanic should select appropriate spindle speed and feed rate for the specific workpiece material to avoid overheating the cutting edge. Do not apply excessive downward force; let the split point geometry and proper feed rate do the work. Eye protection and chip guards are required per standard shop safety practices.
