The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996183 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit engineered for drilling into hard and abrasive materials where standard high-speed steel bits fall short. Sized at 0.154 inches (Wire Size 23), this bit features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking on entry and lowers thrust force needed to start the hole. The M41CO cobalt alloy construction provides heat resistance during high-speed or dry drilling operations. The screw machine length body, at 2-1/16 inches overall, is shorter than a jobber bit, giving machinists and fabricators improved rigidity and reduced deflection in drill press, turret lathe, and screw machine applications.
This bit is suited for production drilling in metal fabrication shops, machine shops, and maintenance environments where hard materials such as stainless steel, hardened alloys, and cast iron are common workpiece materials. The straight-cylindrical shank seats directly into standard drill chucks without adapters. Its 1-inch spiral flute length and 2.5xD flute-to-diameter ratio promote chip evacuation in short-hole applications. No coolant-through capability is present, so flood coolant or cutting oil applied externally is recommended when drilling ferrous metals.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use drill bit for applications requiring a Wire Size 23 (0.154-inch) screw machine length bit in the 0.1500 to 0.2000 inch drill bit size range, conforming to ANSI specifications.
Installation of this bit is performed by machinists and metal fabrication technicians using a keyed or keyless drill chuck on a drill press, CNC machine, or screw machine. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank fully in the chuck before operation. Apply cutting oil or flood coolant externally when drilling ferrous metals to extend tool life and manage heat buildup. Inspect the split point for chipping or wear before each use, as cobalt bits used on hardened materials are subject to edge wear over time.
