The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996122 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard materials. Built to ANSI standards under the M41CO series, it features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and minimizes the need for a center punch. The right-hand spiral flute geometry clears chips efficiently during operation. At 2-3/8 inches overall length with a 1-1/4 inch flute length, this stub-length bit provides increased rigidity over jobber-length alternatives, making it well suited to production drilling environments where chatter and deflection are concerns.
This bit is intended for use on hard and difficult-to-machine materials including stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and hardened steel. The screw machine length format makes it a standard choice for turret lathes, screw machines, and CNC machining centers where a shorter, stiffer tool is required. Machinists, toolroom technicians, and production drill press operators working in metal fabrication and manufacturing shops will find this bit appropriate for both intermittent and production-rate drilling applications. Coolant-through capability is not available on this bit.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use cobalt drill bit for applications requiring ANSI-standard screw machine length tooling in the 0.2000 to 0.2500 inch decimal inch drill size range.
Installation and use of this drill bit should be performed by qualified machinists or toolroom personnel familiar with metal cutting operations. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in a properly sized chuck or collet before operation, and verify that the machine spindle is completely stopped before changing tooling. Select feeds and speeds appropriate for the workpiece material and machine type; cobalt bits tolerate higher heat than standard HSS but still require proper cutting fluid application when drilling hard alloys. Inspect the cutting edges for wear before each use and replace the bit if chipping or dulling is observed.
