The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996101 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit sized at wire gauge 44 (0.0860 inches decimal) with a 135-degree split point and web-thinned tip. Designed for high-performance drilling in hard and difficult-to-machine materials, this bit features a right-hand cut, straight-cylindrical shank, and regular spiral flutes with a 2.5xD flute-to-diameter ratio. The overall length is 1.75 inches with a 0.75-inch flute length. It carries an ANSI specification designation and is built to M41 material grade standards. Licensed HVAC service techs, machinists, pipefitters, and general trade professionals commonly use screw machine length bits where stub-length rigidity is required in tight drilling situations.
This bit is suited for drilling hard materials including hardened steel, stainless, and other tough alloys in close-quarter or machine-mounted applications. The shortened screw machine length body reduces deflection and improves hole accuracy compared to jobber-length bits. The 135-degree split point self-centers on contact, minimizing the need for a center punch on most hard surfaces. It is sold individually with a minimum order quantity of 12 units, making it appropriate for shop stocking or fleet tool replenishment.
Designed as a screw machine length replacement or stock bit for use in standard drill chucks and screw machine setups accepting a 0.0860-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Compatible with hand drills, drill presses, and CNC or turret-style screw machines where the straight shank diameter fits the collet or chuck.
This bit is installed by a machinist, tool-and-die tech, or qualified trade professional using a drill press, hand drill, or screw machine with an appropriate chuck size. Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operation and verify chuck key is removed prior to starting the machine. Use cutting fluid or coolant when drilling hard alloys to extend bit life, even though the bit itself is not coolant-through rated. Inspect the cutting edges and point for wear or chipping before each use session.
