The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996049 is a screw machine length cobalt drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and tough materials. Built to Series M41CO standards, it measures 0.116 inches (No. 32 wire gauge) in diameter with an overall length of 1.875 inches and a flute length of 0.875 inches. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and requires no center punch on most surfaces. The tapered web and web-thinned geometry lower thrust requirements and improve chip evacuation in demanding applications. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance mechanics rely on this bit for production and repair drilling where standard HSS bits fall short.
This bit is suited for drilling hard metals including alloy steels, stainless steel, hardened materials, and other ferrous workpieces where standard high-speed steel tooling fails prematurely. The screw machine length (stub) format provides added rigidity compared to jobber-length bits, making it a preferred choice for drill press work, CNC setups, lathe tail-stock operations, and hand-held drilling in tight clearance situations. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard three-jaw chucks and collet systems without modification.
Designed as a heavy-duty OEM-style replacement or direct-use screw machine length drill bit for applications requiring a No. 32 wire gauge (0.116 inch diameter) cobalt stub drill in standard straight-cylindrical shank tooling setups.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or tool operators familiar with drill press, lathe, or CNC equipment. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is locked out before changing bits. Secure the straight cylindrical shank firmly in the chuck or collet and verify runout before drilling. Do not exceed the recommended feed and speed parameters for the workpiece material and machine type as specified by the tooling manufacturer or applicable shop standards.
