The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996034 is a No. 12 wire size screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and difficult-to-machine materials. Built from M41 cobalt high-speed steel, this bit delivers heat resistance and edge retention beyond standard HSS tooling. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and cutting force at entry, making it a reliable choice for production drilling environments. At 2.25 inches overall length, the stub-length design maximizes rigidity and minimizes deflection. Machinists, tool-and-die trades, and maintenance technicians use this bit in drill presses, CNC turret lathes, and hand-held pneumatic or electric drills.
This drill bit is suited for drilling hard ferrous metals, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, titanium, and other materials that generate elevated cutting temperatures. The screw machine length format is standard in production shops and toolrooms where clearance is limited or a stiffer setup is required. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard three-jaw chucks and collet systems without modification. The 2.5xD flute-to-diameter ratio provides adequate chip evacuation for through-holes in the intended material range.
Designed as a No. 12 wire size (0.1890 inch decimal) stub-length drill bit compatible with any standard three-jaw chuck or collet accepting a 0.1890-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Suitable for use in drill presses, CNC machines, turret lathes, and handheld power drills configured for production or maintenance drilling in hard materials.
This bit is installed and changed by machinists or maintenance technicians following standard lockout-tagout procedures before securing or removing tooling from any powered machine. Ensure the chuck or collet is rated for the shank diameter and that spindle speed is set to a value appropriate for the workpiece material and bit diameter per standard machining reference tables. Do not run cobalt bits without adequate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling hard ferrous alloys, as dry cutting accelerates edge wear. Inspect the cutting edge and web condition before each use; resharpening is recommended when thrust load increases noticeably during entry.
