The PASCO 2899 is a brown random cut oakum packaged in a 1 pound bag, designed for caulking and packing lead-and-oakum joints in cast iron drain, waste, and vent pipe systems. This oakum is treated with a special compound that causes it to expand when wet, creating a tight, reliable seal in bell-and-spigot joints. It contains no tar, keeping the work cleaner during installation. The random cut lengths reduce handling time on the job, making it a practical choice for plumbers working on both new construction and renovation drain systems.
This product is suited for residential and light commercial plumbing applications where cast iron pipe joints require packing before lead pour or other caulking compounds are applied. It is commonly used by licensed plumbers working on below-grade and above-grade DWV systems. The cut lengths are sized to pack well into bell sockets, minimizing the need for trimming or additional prep work at the joint.
Designed as an OEM-style caulking material for use in cast iron bell-and-spigot drain, waste, and vent pipe joint applications in residential and commercial plumbing systems.
Oakum joint packing is typically performed by a licensed plumber in accordance with local plumbing codes and the International Plumbing Code (IPC). Shut off all flow and ensure the pipe system is dry before beginning joint work. Pack the oakum firmly into the bell socket using a yarning iron and packing tool before applying the finishing joint material. Do not overfill the joint cavity, as adequate space must remain for the lead or other caulking compound.
