The OSG VGM5-1024 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling operations in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It features a 3/16 inch cutting diameter, five helical flutes with a 40-degree helix angle, and a variable index design that reduces chatter and improves surface finish. The EXO coating provides enhanced wear resistance and heat management at the cutting edge. With a 15/64 inch length of cut and a long-reach configuration, this end mill is suited for slotting, profiling, and finishing passes where extended reach into a workpart is required. It is used by machinists and tool-and-die professionals in job shops, production machining, and precision manufacturing environments.
The VGM5-1024 is built for demanding milling applications where tool life and dimensional accuracy matter. Its micrograin carbide substrate supports cutting in hardened steels, stainless, and high-temp alloys. The straight cylindrical shank measures 3/16 inch in diameter, matching the cutting diameter for straightforward toolholder setup. The single-end, right-hand cutting configuration is standard for use in conventional CNC machining centers and manual mills with right-hand spindle rotation. The extended reach geometry makes it well-suited for deep-pocket work and side-wall finishing where shorter tools cannot reach.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard tooling option for CNC machining centers and manual mills accepting 3/16 inch straight shank end mills in ER, TG, or equivalent collet-style toolholders.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists familiar with CNC or manual milling equipment. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe state before changing tooling. Seat the shank fully in the collet or toolholder and torque the retention nut to the toolholder manufacturer's specification. Verify runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut, as excessive runout will accelerate wear on a five-flute carbide tool.
