The OSG VGM5-0165 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for high-performance milling in metalworking and machining applications. Built on OSG's VGM5 series platform, this single-end tool features a 5/8 inch cutting diameter, five helical flutes at a 40-degree helix angle, and an EXO finish coating for extended tool life and heat resistance. The variable index geometry reduces chatter and improves surface finish in demanding cuts. With a stub-length profile and straight cylindrical shank, it is suited for rigid setups where tool deflection must be minimized. Machinists and CNC operators in job shops, aerospace, and general manufacturing will find this tool appropriate for finishing and semi-finishing operations in ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
The VGM5-0165 is a stub-length, center-cutting end mill intended for slotting, peripheral milling, and plunging operations where a compact reach is preferred. The right-hand cut and right-hand flute configuration make it compatible with conventional vertical and horizontal milling machines as well as CNC machining centers. The 25/32 inch length of cut accommodates typical shallow-to-medium depth milling passes. The EXO coating provides lubricity and oxidation resistance, making the tool well suited for dry or semi-dry cutting environments.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use solid carbide square end mill for use in standard milling chucks, ER collet systems, and shrink-fit holders accepting a 5/8 inch straight cylindrical shank.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the tool changer or collet is de-energized before mounting or removing the end mill. Confirm shank engagement meets the holder manufacturer's minimum grip depth recommendation before beginning a cut. Inspect the cutting edges for chips or wear before each use, as carbide tooling can fracture without visible warning if re-run in a damaged state.
