The OSG 87706 is a solid carbide tap extractor drill designed to remove broken taps from threaded holes without damaging the surrounding material. The drill measures 15/64 inches in diameter with a 1-3/16 inch flute length and an overall length of approximately 2.9 inches. Solid carbide construction provides the hardness and wear resistance required to cut into hardened tap material, making it suitable for metal fabrication shops, maintenance facilities, and machine shops where broken tap removal is a routine service task. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary users of this tool.
The OSG 87706 is used in operations where a tap has broken off flush or below the surface of a workpiece. The 15/64 inch diameter is sized for use with specific tap extractor sets that engage the flutes of a broken tap to back it out. Typical applications include ferrous and non-ferrous metals in both production and repair environments. The solid carbide body holds up to the intermittent contact and lateral stresses common in tap extraction work.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement drill for use with tap extractor sets requiring a 15/64 inch carbide drill, consistent with Series 5172 tooling applications.
Tap extractor drills are installed and operated by machinists or skilled tradespeople using a drill press, milling machine, or hand drill with a suitable chuck. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent movement and tool breakage. Carbide tooling is brittle — avoid side loading and do not use on a worn or wobbling spindle. Use appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and reduce heat buildup.
