The OSG 8690940 is a solid carbide screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding metalworking applications. With a 0.3701 inch (9.40 mm) diameter and a 140-degree split point, this bit delivers fast, accurate penetration with reduced thrust force. The coated finish extends tool life in abrasive and high-heat environments. A right-hand spiral flute with R-thinned web geometry promotes efficient chip evacuation and helps maintain hole straightness. Coolant-through capability supports continuous high-speed operation in production settings. This bit is installed and used by machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and CNC operators.
The 8690940 is suited for drilling steel, alloy steel, cast iron, titanium, and titanium alloys in both job shop and production environments. Its screw machine length body — shorter overall length relative to jobber bits — provides added rigidity for close-tolerance work in drill presses, machining centers, and CNC lathes with live tooling. The 3xD flute-to-diameter ratio and tapered web configuration are optimized for interrupted cuts and hard materials where standard carbide geometry underperforms.
Rated for primary workpiece materials including steel, alloy steel, cast iron, titanium, and titanium alloy. Fits standard straight-shank collet systems with a 10.00 mm (0.394 inch) shank diameter. Part of OSG Series 6500.
Installation should be performed by qualified machinists or CNC technicians. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank fully in a properly sized collet or drill chuck before operation — partial engagement reduces rigidity and increases breakage risk with carbide tooling. Confirm spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for the workpiece material and hole depth before starting the cut. Solid carbide is brittle; avoid side loads, re-drilling misaligned holes, or using the bit as a reamer.
