The OSG 8623016 is a cobalt extra length drill bit designed for drilling applications that require extended reach beyond what a jobber-length bit provides. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a WXL finish, this bit handles harder workpiece materials and elevated cutting temperatures with better wear resistance than standard HSS tooling. It features a 120-degree drill point angle, right-hand spiral flute configuration, and R-thinned web geometry that reduces thrust force at entry. The straight-cylindrical shank seats directly in standard drill chucks or collet holders without adapters. Machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and metalworking tradespeople are the primary users of this bit.
This drill bit suits production drilling, maintenance, and fabrication environments where access depth or workpiece thickness exceeds standard drill length capacity. The 15xD flute-to-diameter ratio provides extended reach while the two-flute spiral design promotes consistent chip evacuation in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. It is well suited for use in drill presses, CNC machining centers, and handheld power drills where a straight-cylindrical shank is accepted. No coolant-through capability is present, so external coolant or cutting oil applied at the entry point is recommended when drilling hardened or heat-sensitive materials.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for standard straight-cylindrical shank extra length drill bits in the 0.063-inch diameter class, compatible with any drill chuck or collet holder accepting a 2 mm shank diameter.
Secure the shank fully within the chuck or collet to the recommended engagement depth before beginning any drilling operation. Ensure the workpiece is clamped or fixtured to prevent movement under cutting load. Apply a suitable cutting fluid or oil when drilling ferrous metals to manage heat buildup, particularly given the absence of coolant-through channels. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use, and replace the bit if edge geometry is compromised to avoid workpiece damage or breakage.
