The OSG 8597522 is a jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and aluminum alloys. It is ground from vanadium high speed steel and coated with TiN (titanium nitride) to extend cutting edge life and reduce friction. The 120-degree point angle with S-thinned web geometry improves self-centering and reduces the thrust needed to start a hole. At 96 millimeters overall length with a 52-millimeter flute length, this bit fits standard drill chucks and CNC tool holders with a 6-millimeter straight-cylindrical shank. The right-hand spiral flute efficiently evacuates chips during blind-hole and through-hole operations.
This bit is suited for production drilling, maintenance, and fabrication work in metalworking shops, HVAC duct fabrication, plumbing rough-in, and electrical conduit work where clean, accurate holes in steel or aluminum are required. It handles blind holes, cross holes, and through-drilling in both manual drill press and CNC machining center applications. The Series 1600 designation places it in the high-performance jobber category, making it appropriate when standard HSS bits wear too quickly on harder or abrasive stock.
Designed for use in standard drill presses, hand drills, and CNC machining centers that accept a straight-cylindrical shank. Compatible workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, aluminum, aluminum alloy, and aluminum silicate per OSG Series 1600 specifications.
A licensed machinist or qualified tradesperson should secure the shank fully in the drill chuck or collet before operation. Ensure the workpiece is clamped or fixtured before drilling to prevent rotation. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant on stainless steel and hard alloys to maintain edge life, noting this bit does not have coolant-through capability. Inspect the cutting edge for wear before each use and replace when point geometry degrades to avoid oversized holes or workpiece damage.
