The OSG 7003200 is a spiral point STI (Screw Thread Insert) tap designed for cutting internal threads sized 3-48 UNC in preparation for helicoil or thread insert installation. Manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, this plug-chamfer tap features 2 flutes and an H2 thread limit for controlled tolerance fits. Overall length is 1.941 inches with a thread length of 0.322 inches and a shank diameter of 0.141 inches. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting edge, making it well suited for through-hole tapping operations in production and maintenance environments.
This tap is used in light-duty thread repair and insert-prep applications where a 3-48 UNC thread form is required. The plug chamfer provides a gradual cutting lead suitable for starting in through holes. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool-and-die professionals will use this tap when installing helicoil thread inserts - referenced as Helicoil reference number 03CSA - in stripped or undersized 3-48 holes in metal components. It is sold individually and is compatible with standard tap handles and machine tapping operations at appropriate speeds for high-speed steel tooling.
Designed for use with 3-48 UNC helicoil thread insert systems, referenced as Helicoil number 03CSA. Intended for through-hole tapping applications requiring an STI thread form at the 3-48 UNC standard.
This tap is installed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a standard tap wrench or machine tapping setup. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the correct STI tap drill size for 3-48 UNC has been used before threading. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Do not force the tap if resistance increases unexpectedly - back off to clear chips and check for tap wear or drill hole depth.
