The OSG 5946400 is a cobalt tapered end mill designed for precision milling of contoured surfaces, mold cavities, and angled walls in metal workpieces. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it delivers strong heat and wear resistance in demanding cutting applications. The 3-degree taper per side produces a consistent draft angle along the 2.25-inch length of cut. With a 0.25-inch small end diameter, 0.5-inch shank diameter, and a 4.25-inch overall length, this tool is suited for CNC machining centers and manual mills. It is installed and operated by machinists, tool and die makers, and mold makers working in job shops or production environments.
The OSG 5946400 is built for milling tapered slots, pockets, and draft-angle features in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Its square end geometry supports flat-bottom cuts, while the center-cutting design allows direct plunge entry. The 25-degree helix angle and right-hand flute direction provide efficient chip evacuation. The uncoated finish makes it straightforward to regrind after wear. This tool is appropriate for both roughing and finishing passes in medium-duty milling operations.
Designed as an OEM-style tapered end mill for use in standard 0.5-inch collet or end mill holder setups on CNC or manual milling machines requiring a 3-degree-per-side taper profile.
Installation is performed by a machinist. Secure the 0.5-inch shank in a clean, correctly sized collet or end mill holder and torque to the machine manufacturer's specification. Confirm runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut. Power down the spindle completely before tool changes, and inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use.
