The OSG 582 is a straight flute plug tap designed for cutting right-hand internal threads to the M6x1.00 Metric Coarse standard. Built from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, it delivers consistent thread form across a broad range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The plug chamfer provides a standard entry angle suited for through-hole and blind-hole applications where a gradual thread lead-in is acceptable. With a 19 mm thread length and 62 mm overall length, this tap fits standard tap wrenches and machine holders used in general machining, maintenance, and fabrication environments. Machinists, toolmakers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users.
This tap is well suited for production and job-shop threading in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel. The three-flute straight design works best in through-hole applications and shorter blind holes where chip evacuation is manageable. It is a common choice for tapping M6 threaded holes in fixtures, housings, brackets, and mechanical assemblies across industrial and repair shop settings.
Designed for use in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel workpieces. Compatible with standard tap wrenches, T-handle holders, and machine tapping heads configured for a 6 mm shank with 4.5 mm square drive.
Secure the workpiece before tapping and ensure the correct drill size for M6x1.00 threads has been used prior to tapping. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping oil to extend tool life and improve thread quality, particularly in steel and cast iron. Use consistent, steady feed pressure and back off periodically to break chips when working in deeper holes. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace if thread quality degrades.
