The OSG 5743900 is a single-end square end mill designed for general-purpose milling in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Built from 3% vanadium high speed steel, it delivers good wear resistance and edge retention at moderate cutting speeds without the cost of carbide tooling. The 1 inch cutting diameter and 2 inch length of cut make it well suited for slotting, peripheral milling, and light profiling. With a 30-degree spiral helix, right-hand cut, and right-hand flute geometry, it evacuates chips efficiently and reduces chatter during full-width passes. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary users of this tool.
This end mill fits standard 1 inch diameter tool holders and collet chucks found on vertical machining centers, knee mills, and manual Bridgeport-style machines. The regular-length designation and 4.5 inch overall length make it a practical general-shop tool for production floors, maintenance departments, and job shops running medium-carbon steels, alloy steels, and aluminum. The uncoated finish allows easy re-sharpening on conventional surface or tool grinders.
Designed as a standard-shank replacement end mill for use in 1 inch diameter end mill holders, side-lock holders, and collet chucks on vertical mills and machining centers.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists following standard toolroom practice. De-energize and lock out the spindle drive before changing tooling. Seat the shank fully in the holder and torque the retention screw or collet nut to the holder manufacturer's specification. Verify runout with a dial indicator before initiating a cut, as excessive runout accelerates flute wear and degrades surface finish.
