The OSG 5742300 is a 4-flute square end mill designed for general-purpose milling in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Manufactured from 3% vanadium high speed steel, this tool delivers improved wear resistance and edge retention compared to standard M2 HSS. The 5742300 features a 5/8 inch cutting diameter, a 1-5/8 inch length of cut, and a 30-degree spiral helix angle that promotes smooth chip evacuation and reduced cutting forces. It is center-cutting, allowing direct plunge entry into workpiece material without a pre-drilled hole. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals in job shop, maintenance, and production environments rely on this type of end mill for slotting, peripheral milling, and pocket milling operations.
This end mill is suited for use in manual knee mills, CNC machining centers, and drill press setups where a 5/8 inch shank is supported. The regular-length geometry and right-hand cut with right-hand flute configuration make it a standard choice for conventional and climb milling on steel, cast iron, aluminum, and plastics. It is sold individually and fits into any standard ER or end mill holder accepting a 5/8 inch straight shank.
Designed as a standard 5/8 inch shank square end mill compatible with ER collet chucks, Weldon-style end mill holders, and milling machine spindles accepting 5/8 inch straight shanks. Part of OSG Series 574.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following shop safety procedures. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is powered down before inserting or removing the end mill from the holder. Seat the shank to the minimum recommended depth of engagement for the holder type in use, and verify runout with a dial indicator before beginning the cut. Consult the machine tool manufacturer specifications for maximum RPM and feed rate recommendations appropriate to the workpiece material.
