The OSG 5740700 is a 4-flute square end mill designed for general-purpose milling in ferrous and non-ferrous metals, alloy steels, and similar workpiece materials. Built from 3% vanadium high speed steel, the tool offers improved wear resistance and toughness compared to standard M2 HSS, making it a practical choice for shops running moderate-speed operations without carbide tooling. The 5/16-inch cutting diameter pairs with a 3/4-inch length of cut and a 30-degree helix angle to produce clean peripheral and slot cuts. It is centercutting, which allows direct plunge entry without pre-drilling. The right-hand cut, right-hand spiral flute geometry is the most common configuration for vertical and horizontal milling machine setups.
This end mill fits standard CNC machining centers, knee mills, and manual milling machines equipped with a 3/8-inch collet or tool holder. The regular-length body and 2-1/2-inch overall length keep the tool appropriately rigid for slotting, profiling, and light pocketing operations at the 5/16-inch diameter. It is an uncoated tool, suited for use with cutting fluid or coolant to manage heat and chip evacuation. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and job-shop operators working with steel, cast iron, aluminum, and similar materials will find this tool a direct fit for standard production and maintenance machining tasks.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or standard-stock end mill for milling machines and machining centers using a 3/8-inch collet or end mill holder. Part of OSG Series 574.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the tool holder is clean and free of debris before seating the shank. Tighten the collet or set-screw holder to the tool holder manufacturer's specified procedure. Confirm runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut, as excessive runout accelerates tool wear and reduces surface finish quality at this diameter.
