The OSG 5740408 is a 4-flute square end mill designed for precision milling operations in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from 3% vanadium high speed steel, this tool delivers improved wear resistance over standard M2 HSS. The TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating adds a harder surface layer that reduces friction and extends tool life in interrupted cuts and abrasive materials. At 7/32 inch (0.2188 inch) cutting diameter with a 1/2 inch length of cut, this end mill is suited for slotting, profiling, and light pocketing operations where a smaller-diameter tool is required. A 30-degree helix angle promotes smooth chip evacuation and reduces chatter during the cut.
This end mill is used in manual and CNC milling operations across tool and die, maintenance, and general machining environments. The 3/8 inch shank fits standard ER collets, side-lock holders, and shrink-fit chucks commonly found in vertical machining centers and knee mills. Its centercutting geometry allows direct plunge entry into workpiece material without a pre-drilled hole. The regular-length configuration suits most standard reach applications without sacrificing rigidity. Machinists working in production or job-shop settings will find this tool well-suited for finishing passes and medium-depth roughing in steel, cast iron, and similar materials.
Designed as a standard-shank replacement end mill for CNC and manual milling applications requiring a 7/32 inch cutting diameter with a 3/8 inch straight shank. Part of OSG Series 574.
Installation is performed by a machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before changing tooling. Seat the shank fully and evenly in the collet or tool holder and torque the retention mechanism to the holder manufacturer's specification. Verify runout with a dial indicator before beginning cuts, as excessive runout on small-diameter end mills accelerates wear and can cause premature breakage.
