The OSG 5740100 is a 4-flute square end mill designed for general-purpose milling in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from 3% vanadium high speed steel, this end mill delivers improved wear resistance compared to standard M2 HSS tooling. The 1/8 inch cutting diameter and 3/8 inch length of cut make it well suited for slotting, peripheral milling, and light profiling operations in smaller workpieces. The 30-degree helix angle promotes efficient chip evacuation while reducing cutting forces, and the centercutting geometry allows direct plunge entry without a pre-drilled start hole. Machinists and tool room operators on manual mills or CNC machining centers commonly specify this series for precision work.
This end mill fits applications in job shops, tool rooms, and production environments where consistent performance from HSS tooling is required. The 3/8 inch shank diameter seats in standard ER or end mill holders, and the 2-5/16 inch overall length suits typical short-reach setups. Right-hand cut with right-hand spiral flutes is the standard configuration for conventional and climb milling on vertical machining centers. The uncoated finish is appropriate for use with cutting fluid or on materials where coated tooling is not required.
Designed as a standard replacement or production end mill for use in any machine tool accepting a 3/8 inch straight shank, including vertical machining centers, knee mills, and manual milling machines with ER collet chucks or set-screw end mill holders.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked before inserting or removing the end mill from the holder. Verify holder runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut, as excessive runout will reduce tool life and surface finish quality. Consult the machine manufacturer and applicable OSHA machine guarding requirements before operating.
