The OSG 5411700 is a 4-flute cobalt square end mill designed for milling ferrous and hard materials in machining centers and manual mills. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it delivers heat resistance and edge retention suited to tough steels and stainless. The cutter measures 9/16 inch (0.5625 inch) in diameter with a 1-3/8 inch length of cut and a 1/2 inch shank diameter. Overall length is 3-3/8 inches. The 30-degree spiral flute geometry promotes chip evacuation and smooth cutting action. This is an uncoated, centercutting end mill, allowing plunge entry without a pre-drilled pilot hole. It belongs to OSG Series 541 and suits production and job-shop environments where consistent tolerances are required.
The OSG 5411700 is appropriate for slotting, profiling, and peripheral milling operations on steel, alloy steel, and similar ferrous workpiece materials. Its centercutting capability makes it useful in applications requiring direct plunge or ramping entry. The right-hand cut and right-hand flute configuration matches standard spindle rotation on most CNC machining centers and knee mills. It is sized for use with standard 1/2 inch collets or end mill holders, making it a common selection in general-purpose milling setups across tool rooms, production shops, and maintenance machining applications.
Designed as a standard-shank square end mill for use in 1/2 inch collets, shrink-fit holders, or end mill adapters on CNC machining centers and manual milling machines.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe, de-energized state before mounting or removing the end mill. Seat the shank fully into the holder to the recommended minimum engagement depth and torque the set screw or collet nut per the toolholder manufacturer specification. Verify runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut; excessive runout accelerates tool wear and can produce out-of-tolerance surfaces.
