The OSG 34500608 is a powdered metal spiral flute STI tap designed for cutting M6x1.00 metric coarse threads in steel thread inserts. It features a 3-flute, 15-degree right-hand helix geometry with a modified bottoming chamfer that allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a standard plug chamfer. The V-finish coating provides a smooth, hard surface that reduces chip adhesion and extends tool life. This tap is built to 6H class of fit tolerance with a D3 thread limit, making it suitable for precision threaded insert applications. Trade professionals in machining, MRO maintenance, and industrial assembly turn to this tap when installing Heli-Coil or similar STI-style thread inserts.
This tap is used in applications where a worn or damaged M6 metric thread must be repaired using a thread insert system. Typical installation environments include manufacturing maintenance, aerospace component repair, automotive engine work, and general machine shop operations. The modified bottoming chamfer geometry is especially useful when the tapped hole has limited depth and full thread engagement near the bottom is required. The 15-degree helix angle promotes chip evacuation in through-holes and shallow blind holes.
Designed for use with STI-style thread insert systems requiring an M6x1.00 metric coarse tapped hole prepared to 6H class of fit.
This tap is installed by machinists and maintenance technicians using a standard tap wrench, CNC tapping cycle, or drill press with tapping attachment. Before tapping, ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct STI tap drill diameter per the insert manufacturer specifications. Use cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tap life. Do not force the tap if resistance increases unexpectedly, as powdered metal taps can fracture under torsional overload.
