The OSG 2991701 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting internal metric fine threads in a variety of ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, this tap offers good wear resistance and lubricity for tapping operations where chip evacuation is critical. The spiral flute geometry pulls chips up and out of the hole, making it well-suited for blind-hole applications. It features a modified bottoming chamfer, a 45-degree helix angle, a D5 thread limit, and an overall length of 2-15/16 inches. Installation is performed by licensed machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance professionals working with precision threaded assemblies.
This tap is intended for cutting M10x1.25 metric fine right-hand threads in blind holes. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a hole compared to standard plug or taper configurations. It is suited for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel workpieces. The Series 299 designation places it within OSG standard spiral flute tap product line for metric fine applications. Typical use cases include automotive, aerospace, and general metalworking environments where precise thread form and chip control are required.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use tap for M10x1.25 metric fine threaded applications in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel workpieces.
This tap is installed by machinists and maintenance technicians using a tapping machine, CNC machining center, or manual tap handle. Power down all equipment and secure the workpiece before beginning any tapping operation. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread quality. Do not force a tap past resistance, as spiral flute taps in blind holes can break if chips are not cleared or if feed rate is incorrect.
