The OSG 2990800 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting M5x0.80 metric coarse internal threads in a wide range of ferrous materials. Manufactured from vanadium high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this tap features a 45-degree helix angle that efficiently evacuates chips upward out of the hole — a geometry well suited for blind-hole tapping operations. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind bore than a standard plug or taper style. Three flutes provide adequate chip clearance while maintaining core strength at this diameter. Licensed to a 6H class of fit and D4 thread limit, this tap produces threads within standard tolerance for general fastener assembly in machined components.
This tap is intended for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel workpieces. It is a solid choice for job shops, tool rooms, and production environments where M5 metric threads are routinely tapped in blind holes on CNC machining centers or manual knee mills. The right-hand flute and right-hand thread direction are standard for conventional tapping setups. Coolant-through capability is not included, so flood coolant or tapping fluid applied externally at the entry point is the recommended lubrication method.
Designed for tapping M5x0.80 metric coarse threads in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel. Fits standard 5 mm tap holders, collet chucks, and tapping heads sized for the 4.9276 mm shank diameter.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist familiar with tapping feeds, speeds, and fixturing requirements for the workpiece material. Ensure the spindle is at zero RPM and the machine is in a safe state before loading or changing the tap. Use the appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material, particularly when working with stainless steel or hardened steel. Do not reverse the tap under power without confirming the machine or attachment is configured for synchronized reversing to avoid tap breakage.
