The OSG 2963600 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting internal M6x1.00 metric coarse threads in through-hole and blind-hole applications. Built from vanadium high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this tap runs a 50-degree helix angle that efficiently evacuates chips upward out of the hole — a critical advantage when tapping ductile materials like aluminum. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of a blind bore while still providing enough lead-in to start straight. The 6H class of fit delivers a standard metric thread tolerance suitable for most fastener and assembly applications. Overall length is 2.5 inches with a shank diameter of 0.255 inches.
This tap is specifically suited for aluminum and other non-ferrous or light-alloy workpieces where chip packing is a common cause of tap breakage. The spiral flute geometry pulls chips back through the flutes rather than pushing them ahead of the cutting edge, reducing the risk of re-cutting and tool failure. Machinists, toolroom operators, and production floor technicians use this tap in CNC machining centers, knee mills, and drill presses equipped with tapping attachments. The 2-flute design is well matched to softer materials where chip volume per tooth is high. Series 296 from OSG.
Designed for use in aluminum workpieces as an M6x1.00 metric coarse spiral flute tap with a D5 thread limit and 6H class of fit. Compatible with standard tap holders and tapping chucks accepting a 0.255-inch round shank.
Secure the tap in a floating or rigid tapping holder sized for the 0.255-inch shank before use. Ensure the drill press, mill, or machining center spindle is powered down and the workpiece is firmly fixtured before loading the tap. Apply a cutting fluid appropriate for aluminum to extend tool life and maintain thread finish. Do not exceed the recommended speed range for high-speed steel taps in the material being machined, and back the tap out periodically in hand-tapping operations to break and clear chips.
