The OSG 2942208 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 7/16-20 UNF right-hand internal threads in a wide range of ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, it delivers improved wear resistance and heat tolerance compared to uncoated HSS taps. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. With a 45-degree helix angle, the flute geometry evacuates chips efficiently during tapping operations. Overall length is 3.156 inches with a shank diameter of 0.323 inches. This tap is intended for use by machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool-and-die professionals.
The OSG 2942208 is suited for tapping 7/16-20 UNF threads in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it particularly useful in blind-hole applications where thread engagement close to the bottom of the hole is required. It fits standard tap holders and machine tapping setups in both shop and field maintenance environments. The Series 290 designation identifies it within OSG's spiral flute tap product line.
Designed for use with standard tap holders and machine tapping equipment configured for 7/16-inch taps. Compatible material applications include alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel as specified by the manufacturer.
This tap should be installed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with threading operations. Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped and the tap is properly aligned with the pilot hole before beginning the tapping cycle. Use an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to reduce friction and extend tool life. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use, particularly when working with hardened steel.
